Porgy and Bess is about a crippled black man named Porgy who lives in the slums of South Carolina.  He try’s to save a women named Bess from her violent and obsessive lover named Crown.  Not just this but help save her from a drug dealer.  This is a beautifully represented opera that is sure to leave you breathless.

This opera was first performed in 1935.  The play and opera are based off of a fake place called Catfish Row.  This is a real-life representation of Cabbage Row that really does exist in Charleston in the 1920’s.  The cast are an entire cast of classically trained African American artists and singers.  This work was not widely accepted until 1976  when it became a huge hit.
