  The original Phantom of the Opera was written by a French writer named Gaston Leroux.  He published his novel about this in September 23^rd in 1909.  In the beginning the story sold horribly and the publication of his book was out of print for many years.  Lloyd Webber’s musical in 1986 greatly popularized the book and now The Phantom of the Opera is one of the greatest and longest running Broadways of all time.  It has also been one of the most profitable plays of all time.
