Mama Mia Broadway  Based off of the songs of ABBA, a Swedish pop/dance group that was active from 1972-1982, Mamma Mia! has become a best-selling book by playwright Catherine Johnson and a world-famous Broadway musical.  In 2008, Mamma Mia! also became a movie starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan.  The story line is fictional, not biographical despite the play’s title that was taken from ABBA’s 1975 chart-topper, Mamma Mia.  Since the musical’s Broadway opening in 1999, it has grossed over US $2 billion. This musical is based off of friendship, laughter, and love.

Mama Mia! takes place on a Greek island during the present time.  Sophie is a 20-year-old girl who is engaged to Sky, her fiancée.  She wants to have her father walk her down the aisle on her wedding day but does not know who he is.  In her quest to find out her father’s identity, Sophie stumbles up on her mother’s old diary that details intimate encounters with three men around the time she was conceived.  She believes that one of these men is her father and sends each one a wedding announcement, pretending that she is her mother, Donna.  A day before Sophie’s wedding, her three possible fathers arrive: Sam, an American architect, Harry, a British banker, and Bill, an Australian writer and adventurer.  She meets her potential fathers and advises them not to tell her mother, Donna, that she invited them.  Donna eventually discovers her old lovers and is very upset.  Sophie thought she would recognize her father when she saw all three men together, but it has only left her confused and frustrated.  She tells Sky how she feels but does not tell him what she has done; he reassures her that he will be the only man she ever needs.

At Sophie’s pre-wedding party at the taverna, Sam, Harry and Bill attend uninvited.  The women encourage them to say.  After conversing with each man on the side, Sophie realizes that Bill is most likely her father through some inheritance Donna received through Bill.  Sophie asks Bill to walk her down the aisle and he agrees.  However, Sam and Harry separately pull Sophie aside and tell her they figured out the real reason that they were invited to the wedding.  They each confess that they believe that she is their daughter and that they will walk her down the aisle in the morning.  Sophie is left speechless.  Donna finds Sophie in her room and talks with her about canceling the wedding.  Sophie tells her mother that her children will not grow up not knowing who their father is.  Sky finds out that Sophie invited all three men to find out who her father was and he feels hurt that he was left out of the secret.  After much confrontation with the three men between her mother and her, Sophie and her mother finally reconcile.  Sophie asks Donna if she will walk her down the aisle.  Although at the wedding Sophie’s father is still undetermined, she decides that it does not matter because she loves all three men and the men are happy to be “one-third of a father” to her.  Sophie decides she does not want to get married yet after all and Sky agrees with her.  Sam uses this opportunity to ask Donna to marry him; she accepts and they are married.  Sky and Sophie leave on an around-the-world tour.

Mamma Mia! is 2 hours, 30 minutes long with one intermission.  It is in the musical and comedy genre.  The opening night was October 18, 2001.  Individual tickets are sold through June 21, 2009 and group tickets are on sale until January 3, 2010.
